About the Recall

Product Affected: Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken and Rice Classic Ground (13.2 ounce)

Lot Number: 1759338

Date: February 8, 2017

On February 8, 2017 the PetSmart company issued a voluntary recall for one production lot of its Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken and Rice Classic Ground canned food. Sold in 13.2-ounce cans, this product was sold in PetSmart stores and online between October 10, 2016 and February 7, 2017. Online retailers known to have distributed the product include PetSmart.com, PetFoodDirect.com, and at Pet360.com.

This Grreat Choice recall was issued due to metal contamination that could pose a choking hazard to pets. The recall was initiated after the company received word of consumer complaints made to the manufacturer. As of yet, PetSmart has not directly received any consumer complaints and there have not been any reported cases of illness or injury. No other Grreat Choice products are affected by this problem.

Prior to the February 2017 recall, Grreat Choice pet food products have been recall-free since January 2009. In January 2009, the FDA issued a recall for several types of Grreat Choice dog biscuits due to potential salmonella contamination. The only other recall occurred in March 2007 and it was issued for over a dozen types of Grreat Choice canned dog food due to melamine concerns.

What Should You Do About It?

If you currently have any cans of Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken and Rice Classic Ground from the affected lot number, you should stop feeding it to your dog immediately. Bring whatever you have left of the product back to the place of purchase for a full refund or an exchange. If you choose not to return the product, dispose of it safely. Until a new batch of the product is released, PetSmart recommends feeding another variety of Grreat Choice canned food.
