This brand of dog food is made by the Tractor Supply Company which is based in the United States. This company has more than 1,500 stores across 49 states but they don’t manufacture all of their products themselves. The pet food is actually produced by Diamond Pet Foods, Inc. and that company is owned by Schell and Kampeter. When it comes to their dog food products, 4Health offers a wide variety of choices. This brand offers dry food and wet food options in both original and grain-free recipes. The Tractor Supply website provides some limited information about the brand and makes claims that they use premium ingredients like real meat and fresh fruits and vegetables. A quick review of several products reveals that these claims are true – not only does this brand begin each recipe with a high-quality source of animal protein, but they also make sure of digestible carbohydrates, healthy fats, and beneficial supplements like chelated minerals and dried fermentation products. Though quality may vary slightly from one product to another, as a whole this brand can be considered a good brand for your dog.

Individual Recipe Review: 4Health Grain-Free Duck & Potato Formula Dry Food
This Grain-Free Duck & Potato Formula Dry Food is formulated to meet the energy and nutrient needs of active and working adult dogs. The recipe is made with fresh duck as the #1 ingredient and it is supplemented with grain-free carbohydrates and healthy fats. This formula offers a blend of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to promote skin and coat health, plus it has probiotics to support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion. This recipe is rich in antioxidants and it contains glucosamine and chondroitin for bone and joint support.
As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is fresh duck and it is followed immediately by duck meal. Both of these ingredients are excellent on their own, but they are even better together. Fresh duck contains somewhere around 70% moisture by volume which means that it could lose a significant amount of that volume during the cooking process. Fortunately, duck meal is already cooked to a moisture level around 10% which makes it a very concentrated source of animal protein. Both of these proteins are also complete proteins, so they contain all of the essential amino acids your dog needs. This recipe also contains supplementary protein in the form of fish meal. This too is a concentrated source of protein, but it is difficult to judge the quality since it comes from an unnamed source.
After the two proteins come several gluten-free, grain-free carbohydrates – sweet potatoes, peas, garbanzo beans, and potatoes. In addition to being grain-free, all of these carbohydrates are considered highly digestible and rich sources of nutrients. There are also some supplementary sources of fiber in this recipe such as tomato pomace, dried chicory root, and flaxseed. Your dog will also get some fiber from the fresh fruits and vegetables, but it is good to see that the total fiber content is no higher than 5%. Tomato pomace is considered a questionable ingredient by some, but there is no firm evidence to suggest that it is dangerous.
The remaining ingredients in this Grain-Free Duck & Potato Formula Dry Food consist of healthy fats, fresh fruits and vegetables, probiotics, chelated minerals, and vitamin supplements. The main source of fat in this formula is chicken fat, a highly nutritious ingredient and a rich source of linoleic acid. This ingredient is supplemented by salmon oil and flaxseed to provide a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. The fresh fruits and veggies in this recipe act as natural sources for key nutrients, though there are also some synthetic supplements as well. It is good to see that many of the minerals are chelated – this helps to maximize their absorption – and it is also good that this recipe includes dried fermentation products for probiotic support.
Overall, this Grain-Free Duck & Potato Formula Dry Food has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 24%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 5.0%
- Moisture (Max) – 10%
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.3%
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.4%
- Calorie Content – 3,550 kcal/kg (332 kcal/cup)
Bottom Line:
All in all, the 4Health brand of pet food appears to offer the perfect combination of quality and affordability. While this may not be the absolute best brand on the market, they do use a wide variety of high-quality ingredients including real meat, wholesome carbohydrates, healthy fats, and beneficial supplements. Technically a store brand, this pet food brand is a great option for dog owners who want to give their dog a decent product without spending a lot of money. This brand also has the benefit of offering a wide variety of product choices for dogs in all life stages – even for dogs with specific medical or dietary needs. Overall, you can feel good about feeding your dog one of this brand’s products.
I have always but the puppy large breed for my 11th month old boxer mix and newly acquired great dane. they have both been eating this for 4 months. Recently the Petco I went to was out of the puppy version so I bought the adult version of the same food. My adult Dane instantly started having diarrhea. after a couple days, I was able to get a bag of the puppy version that they are accustomed to. my great dane continues to have diarrhea and be lethargic and now my 11 month old boxer is doing the same behavior…sniffing the food,,,turning his nose and drooling with diarrhea. at first, I thought it may be something that they were getting into but now I am curious. I don’t have any claims but if some other owner has reported similar occurances, please let me know so that I can temporarily feed chicken and rice until the problem is resolved
After hearing the alert for a recall on grain free dog food,I question the safety of feeding 4health to my 2 boston terriers. One has a skin allergy so this is the reason I switched to grain free.Any comments would be welcome.
