The Diamond Pet Food company is owned by Schell & Kampeter and it is marketed as a premium pet food brand that is affordable for the average pet owner. In fact, the company website states that the company’s goal upon founding was to produce high-quality, premium pet food products at an affordable price point and they have stayed true to that vision for decades. Today, they offer three different lines of pet food products but the company remains family-owned and privately held which helps to ensure the quality and safety of their products as well as their nutritional integrity. They also devoted to constantly developing innovative new products and manufacturing processes to ensure that pets around the world get the nutrition they deserve.

When it comes to the ingredients they use, they focus on quality above all else. This company has made the decision to only make the kind of pet food you would be proud to feed your pet which means that they do not skimp on quality. They use only the finest quality ingredients in unique, carefully selected formulas to suit dogs of different breeds, sizes, and ages. Some of the ingredients this brand uses in their products include real meats, poultry and seafood as well as fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and prebiotics and probiotics to help ensure health digestion. Not only do they do their best to ensure the nutritional integrity of their ingredients, but they are very careful about where they get their ingredients – they have a supplier management program in order to uphold their strict standards for safety and quality.

The Diamond name actually covers three unique brands of pet food products. The original brand includes a variety of life stages formulas made with high-quality ingredients in formulas designed to support your dog’s growth and healthy activity. Each product contains balanced levels of protein, fat, and other essential nutrients. The Naturals brand consists of a line of holistic pet food products that are completely free from corn, wheat, and soy but loaded with high-quality proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure optimal nutrition. The Naturals Grain-Free line features superior animal protein sources and zero grains to help optimize your dog’s digestion and to limit his exposure to common food allergens. No matter what your dog’s dietary needs may be, they have a product line and a product to suit him perfectly.

Diamond Recalls 2024:

Diamond Pet Foods is one of the largest manufacturers of pet foods in the United States and its products are also available around the world. Their Pet Foods website provides some important information about their manufacturing processes including the nutritional integrity of their ingredients as well as the standards of safety and quality to which they hold themselves. Even with all of these precautions, however, their Pet Foods have been affected by a number of recalls in recent years. Here is a list of recalls affecting this brand:

  • In December 2005, the FDA issued a recall for several Diamond Pet Foods products manufactured at the company’s Gaston, South Carolina manufacturing plant due to possible aflatoxin contamination.
  • In April 2012, the FDA issued a recall for a number of Diamond dry dog food formulas due to potential salmonella contamination.
  • In May 2012, the FDA issued a recall of Diamond and Diamond Naturals pet foods in an expansion of their former recall due to concerns of salmonella contamination.
  • In March 2013, the FDA issued a recall of Diamond Natural Kitten Formula dry food due to low levels of thiamine. No dog food products were affected.

Is this Food Good for my Dog?

There is no simple answer to this question because the quality of their Pet Foods products varies significantly from one product line to the next. Their Pet Foods website claims that it is their goal to produce the kind of products you would be proud to feed your pet and that they use only the finest quality ingredients in each of their recipes. They state that their recipes are formulated by veterinarians and animal nutritionists as well. A quick review of several products from each product line reveals, however, a good bit of variation in terms of quality. The Naturals Grain-Free line of products is made with premium-quality meats and is completely grain-free – they are also highly digestible and supplemented with both chelated minerals and dried fermentation products. The Naturals line features quality proteins and fresh fruits and vegetables as well as digestible carbohydrates like rice flour, cracked pearled barley, and potatoes, all of which are decent ingredients. Their line of products, however, features a number of corn- and wheat-based ingredients including byproducts and non-nutritive fillers. If you are going to feed your dog a Diamond Pet Foods product, your best bet is either the Naturals or the Naturals Grain-Free line.

Dry: When it comes to their dry food offerings, their food can be divided into three product lines. The line of original recipes is the lowest quality of the three product lines, though it is marketed as a “super premium pet food without the premium price”. Their website states that these products are formulated with high-quality ingredients, yet a review of several recipes reveals the use of low-quality ingredients like wheat flour and corn gluten meal. The Naturals line of dry foods is much higher quality, made with quality proteins and digestible carbohydrates including white rice, cracked pearled barley, and fresh fruits and vegetables. The Naturals Grain-Free product line is another step up, made with digestible gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates like garbanzo beans and sweet potatoes. Here is a list of their dry food recipes:

Diamond Naturals Grain-Free Beef & Sweet Potato Formula Review:

This Naturals Grain-Free Beef & Sweet Potato formula is marketed as an all life stages, high-protein, zero grain formula that is designed to provide dogs with a highly digestible source of energy while also limiting exposure to potential allergens. The first ingredient in each Naturals Grain-Free formula is a high-quality animal protein and this recipe lives up to that claim by listing beef as the first ingredient, followed by lamb meal. Not only does this recipe provide digestible energy but it is also loaded with natural flavor as well as complex carbohydrates plus fresh fruits and vegetables for antioxidant content to ensure health and vitality.

Again, the first ingredient in this Naturals Grain-Free Beef & Sweet Potato formula is beef and it is followed by lamb meal. Beef is a quality ingredient because it is a named source of animal protein. The only potential problem with this ingredient lies in the fact that it is a fresh meat which means that it contains up to 80% moisture by volume. When the whole product is cooked down to a moisture level around 10% (as indicated in the guaranteed analysis) the actual volume of beef protein could be much lower. To help prevent this from being a problem, they have added a supplementary source of protein as the second ingredient – lamb meal. Lamb meal has already been cooked to remove moisture so it is a highly concentrated source of animal protein. Other sources of protein included in this recipe are fish meal and potato protein – the chickpeas and pea flour may also provide some vegetarian protein to supplement the total protein content of this recipe.

After the two protein sources comes four carbohydrates – sweet potatoes, peas, garbanzo beans, and pea flour. All of these are considered digestible carbohydrates and they are also naturally gluten-free and grain-free. Sweet potatoes and garbanzo beans are considered complex carbohydrates which means that they provide a slow-burning source of energy for your dog and won’t cause his blood sugar level to spike. Pea flour may or may not provide much nutritional value in this recipe – it might be included as a thickener rather than a source of energy but this cannot be determined simply by looking at the ingredients list. Some supplementary sources of carbohydrate included in this recipe are tomato pomace, flaxseed, potato fiber and an assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables. The fresh fruits and vegetables are also included as natural sources for key nutrients including antioxidants.

In addition to plenty of complex carbohydrates and high-quality proteins, this  Naturals Grain-Free Beef & Sweet Potato formula recipe also includes several healthy fats. The primary source of fat used in this recipe is canola oil which is a plant-based fat. It is not inherently dangerous for your dog, but animal-based fats are always more biologically valuable. Fortunately, this recipe also includes salmon oil as well as flaxseed. These ingredients combined help to provide a balance of omega fatty acids that not only support your dog’s immune health but also promote the health and condition of his skin and coat. Addition recipes included in this formula are chelated minerals and dried fermentation products. Chelated minerals have been bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest. Dried fermentation products act as probiotics to help regulate your dog’s digestion.

Overall, this Naturals Grain-Free Beef & Sweet Potato formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 24%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Zinc (Min) – 150 mg/kg
  • Selenium (Min) – 0.3 mg/kg
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.4%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.3%
  • Calorie Content – 335 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, the Diamond Pet Foods family of brands offers decent quality for dogs in all life stages. It is important to remember, however, that quality varies from one product line to another. The original line of products makes use of low-quality fillers and common food allergens like corn, wheat, and soy while the Naturals and Naturals Grain-Free lines do not. It is also worth noting that the Diamond Pet Foods brand is one of the largest manufacturers of pet food products in the United States which means that there is a lot of room for error. This is evidenced by the fact that the brand has been subject to a handful of FDA recalls in recent years. The bottom line is that you could certainly do worse than this brand of food, but you could do much better as well.
