Halo Spot’s Stew Adult Dog Wholesome Lamb Recipe Review:
This Spot’s Stew Adult Dog Wholesome Lamb Recipe belongs to the Spot’s Stew line of products which is inspired by the original Spot’s Stew recipe. This formula offers “holistic nutrition made with only the best real food ingredients” including real meat, farm-raised vegetables, and natural sources of both soluble and insoluble fibers. Like all of their food products, this recipe is completely free from corn and wheat ingredients, plus it doesn’t contain any artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. A home-style recipe made with recognizable ingredients, this formula offers your dog high-quality nutrition with a natural flavor he is sure to love.
The first ingredient in this recipe is lamb – fresh New Zealand lamb, to be specific. Fresh lamb is loaded with healthy animal protein which is one of the most important building blocks of a balanced diet for dogs. One thing you need to know about fresh meats like lamb, however, is that they may contain up to 80% moisture by volume. This simply means that when the food product is cooked and processed, most of that moisture is removed and the actual volume of protein provided by the fresh lamb could be much less. Meat meals have already been cooked to remove moisture and they are by no means a low-quality ingredient, so it is somewhat strange that they chose to omit all forms of meat meal from their recipes. Supplementary sources of protein included in this recipe are eggs and chicken liver.
In addition to plenty of fresh animal protein, this Halo Spot’s Stew Adult Dog Wholesome Lamb Recipe also includes plenty digestible carbohydrates. The main source of carbohydrate in this recipe is whole peas – these offer digestible carbohydrate and dietary fiber as well as some supplementary plant protein. Other carbohydrates include oats, pearled barley, flaxseed, sweet potatoes, and several fresh fruits and vegetables. All of these are considered highly digestible carbohydrates when properly cooked and they all contribute to the recipe’s crude fiber content of 6.5%. This value is a little bit on the high side (anything under 5% is ideal for dogs), but it is unlikely to cause a problem. The pearled barley is the only carbohydrate that contains gluten but if your dog suffers from a gluten allergy, this recipe may not be the best choice for him.
The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist primarily of fats, supplements, and probiotics. The main source of fat in this Spot’s Stew Adult Dog Wholesome Lamb Recipe is chicken fat. Although this may not sound like a tasty ingredient to you, it is full of natural flavor and a highly concentrated source of energy for your dog. This recipe also includes salmon oil, another animal-based fat that offers high bioavailability. These fats help to provide a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support your dog’s immune and brain health while also promoting healthy skin and coat. Many of the mineral supplements listed for this product are chelated which means that they have been chemically bound to protein molecules – this makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. Finally, this recipe ends with dried fermentation products – probiotics that support healthy and regular digestion.
Overall, this Halo Spot’s Stew Adult Dog Wholesome Lamb Recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 27%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 15%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 6.5%
- Moisture (Max) – 10%
- Taurine (Min) – 0.10%
- L-Carnitine (Min) – 30 mg/kg
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.5%
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.3%
- Calorie Content – 435 kcal/cup
Bottom Line:
Overall, the Halo brand of dog food appears to offer high-quality nutrition. Not only does this company follow a holistic approach to pet nutrition, but they use only the highest quality ingredients available and their produce and manufacture everything in company-owned facilities. All but two of Halo’s ingredients are sourced in the United States and they subject their formulas to rigorous safety testing. When you purchase a pet food product from this brand you can be sure that it will offer your dog complete and balanced nutrition that nourishes his body from the inside out. Plus, with so many options to choose from, you can select a recipe that suits your dog’s life stage and size as well as his individual flavor preferences. Your dog would be lucky to receive any one of Halo’s food products.
IMPORTANT; I have good reason to believe that SPOT’S STEW WHOLESOME CHICKEN RECIPE best buy may 14 19 41DCM 1 2040 IS CONTAMINATED. The cans I bought were very soupy – not like the previous ones I had bought.
FYI…Halo “Holistic Game Bird Medley” formerly “Spot’s Stew Turkey, Duck & Pheasant Recipe” now contains soy protein concentrate. Even with the addition of soy protein, the crude protein dropped from 28% to 27%. Not sure if they were bought out or what changed, but I’m looking for new food for my sensitive-tummied Silky Terrier mix rescue babies. So disappointed. You may want to edit this article to remove the “soy free” parts. Thanks!
My dog has never eaten a bowl of dog food unless he was starving. I bought your brand because it had real ingredients and he devoured every kibble. He doesn’t like the wet can food though. Not sure why. Maybe a texture thing. Thank you.
