The Horizon dog food company has only existed since 2006 but it has already made quite a name for itself in the natural pet food industry. This company is based in Rothsern, Saskatchewan which is located in the heartland of Canadian agriculture. If you visit their website you will have no trouble finding detailed information about the brand and its mission. Based in Canada’s agricultural basin, they have access to some of the highest quality ingredients available and they make it their goal to “formulate, source, manufacture, and ship from [their] own production facility directly to the market”. This is by no means an easy goal to accomplish but it sets the standard for the brand high. You can count on them for fresh, local ingredients and state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities where production standards are set incredibly high.

Although Horizon products are made with fresh local ingredients and manufactured according to strict standards, the brand is still able to offer its products at an affordable price point. They are a family-owned company and they take a unique approach to marketing – they strive to be “transparent and ethical in what [they] do and how [they] make foods consumers can truly trust. Horizon designs their recipes around what they call “purposeful ingredients” – that is all the right ingredients combined at the right levels to ensure optimal nutrition. Each of their recipes is guaranteed to be meat-dense but their choice of proteins remains simple including things like wild-caught salmon, chicken, and turkey. All of their proteins are free from steroids, growth hormones, and preservatives.

Something else that sets them apart from its competition is the fact that they make heavy use of pulses in their formulas. While many pet food manufacturers use legumes (a plant whose fruit is enclosed in a pod), this brand uses pulses – the dried seed itself. Compared to legumes, pulses are very high in protein and fiber while being low in fat – they are also rich in natural flavor, not to mention important vitamins and minerals. Each of their pet food formulas is guaranteed to be free from GMOs, by-products, and chemical preservatives. They keep their recipes simple which helps to ensure quality as well as nutritional integrity. Simply put, you can feel good about feeding your dog any one of their food products.

The Horizon brand is produced and manufactured by the Horizon Pet Nutrition company in company-owned manufacturing facilities. All of these things considered, you should not be surprised to learn that this food brand has never been affected by a recall. This is not necessarily an indication of quality but when this fact is paired with high-quality ingredients and strict manufacturing standards, it offers strong support for that claim.

Horizon Complete All Life Stage Dry Formula Review:

This Complete All Life Stage Dry Food Formula offers premium quality nutrition for dogs in all life stages. According to their website, this recipe is a meat-based formula and whole grain alternative that not only meets but exceeds the benefits of a traditional low-glycemic grain-free diet. By using whole-grain, non-GMO and locally sourced barley, oats, and rye, this recipe meets your dog’s needs for dietary fiber without going overboard. Like all of thier recipes, there is also a strong emphasis on meat – specifically Canadian-sourced chicken and chicken meal. This recipe will not only meet your dog’s nutritional needs, but may also help to protect him against heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and inflammatory disease.

As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is chicken meal – fresh chicken also appears in the fourth ingredient slot. Chicken meal is simply fresh chicken that has already been cooked to remove moisture. This makes chicken meal a highly concentrated source of animal protein. In fact, it may contain up to 300% more protein by volume than fresh chicken, though fresh chicken is still a very valuable ingredient. Because fresh chicken contains up to 80% moisture and most of that moisture will be cooked off, reducing the final volume of the actual protein provided by this ingredient, it is a good thing that chicken meal is the first ingredient and the fresh chicken is a supplementary ingredient. Other supplementary sources of protein include egg product and, for a minimal amount, flaxseed.

After the chicken meal come the two primary sources of carbohydrate – whole grain barley and whole grain rye. There are also whole grain oats which appears after the fresh chicken. All of these carbohydrates are whole-grain options which makes them more digestible for your dog. Because these grains are not milled, they offer up to 35% better absorption for your dog and they also retain more of their natural antioxidant properties. Other sources of carbohydrate included in this recipe are pea fiber, flaxseed, carrots, apples, broccoli, bok choy, cabbage, and blueberries. The pea fiber serves entirely as a source of dietary fiber and the flaxseed contains some protein and fat as well as fiber. The fresh fruits and vegetables do contribute to the fiber content of the recipe but their primary function is to provide natural sources for key vitamins and minerals.

In addition to plenty of healthy protein and whole-grain carbohydrates, this is a Complete All Life Stage Dry Food Formula is also rich in healthy fats. The primary source of fat in this recipe is chicken fat. Though this probably doesn’t sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is a highly concentrated source of energy for your dog. The flaxseed provides some omega-3 fatty acids which balances out the omega-6 content of the salmon oil. The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist primarily of botanicals, nutritional supplements, and dried fermentation products. Dried fermentation products act as prebiotics and probiotics to promote healthy digestion. Many of the minerals included are chelated – this means that they have been bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb.

Overall, this Complete All Life Stage Dry Food Formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.2%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.9%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 3.7%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.4%
  • Calorie Content – 415 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, this is an excellent brand that offers a great deal of selection for dog owners. This company sources all of their ingredients locally when possible and, though they are based in Canada, they own and operate their own production facilities as well. When it comes to their product offerings, they have four different product lines of dry food options and each one is completely unique. This enables you, the dog owner, to choose not only the best product line to meet your dog’s needs, but also the right formula to suit his age or size. They make it easy to judge the quality of their products by offering complete transparency regarding what is and is not included in their formulas. All in all, Horizon is a superior quality brand that still manages to offer its products at an affordable price point.
