NutriSource Grain-Free Prairie Select Adult Dry Reviews: This Grain-Free Prairie Select Adult Dry Food formula is described as a premium dry food “made with delicious quail as the #1 ingredient that features excellent palatability, digestibility, and taste dogs love”. Not only is this recipe protein-rich and full of natural flavor, but it is also made with their exclusive “Good 4 Life” system which incorporates a variety of beneficial supplements to help promote healthy digestion, beautiful skin and coat, improved digestibility, and improved immune function. Overall, this recipe is made with high-quality ingredients and, based on the guaranteed analysis, it seems to offer good nutritional value.

The first ingredient in the Grain-Free Prairie Select Adult Dry Food formula is quail which is followed by duck – duck meal and turkey meal also appear later on in the ingredients list. Fresh meats like quail make an excellent first ingredient for pet food, but you do need to be wary of one thing. Fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture by volume – this just means that once the food is cooked, the actual volume of protein contributed by the fresh quail could be much less. Meat meals like duck meal and turkey meal retain most of their volume and offer up to 300% more protein by volume than fresh meats after cooking. The fact that this recipe includes an assortment of fresh meats and meat meals speaks to the high protein content of the formula.

After the quail and duck come the green lentils which are later followed by peas, garbanzo beans, pea flour, and sunflower meal. All of these are gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates which help to provide dietary fiber as well as key nutrients. The peas and garbanzo beans are the primary carbohydrates and they provide some plant protein as well. The pea flour and sunflower meal are both included as sources of dietary fiber, though the sunflower meal provides some fat as well. Overall, this recipe contains 6% crude fiber which is a little on the high side, but not as bad as some pet foods. It also helps that the carbohydrates are quality and digestible sources.

The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist primarily of fats, supplementary carbohydrates, supplements, and extracts. The main source of fat in this Grain-Free Prairie Select Adult Dry Food formula is chicken fat. This might not sound appetizing to you, but named animal fats are highly valuable in pet food because they provide a concentrated source of energy. The flaxseeds and sunflower meal provide some additional fat and help to balance the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. For vitamin and mineral supplements, you will notice that many of the minerals are chelated. Chelated minerals have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. The dried fermentation products that appear at the end of the list act as probiotics to support your dog’s digestion.

Overall, the Grain-Free Prairie Select Adult Dry Food formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 6%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Zinc (Min) – 165 mg/kg
  • Selenium (Min) – 0.35 mg/kg
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 150 IU/kg
  • Glucosamine (Min) – 300 mg/kg
  • Chondroitin (Min) – 150 mg/kg
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.6%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.8%
  • Calorie Content – 430 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, NutriSource appears to be a decent quality brand that offers a good variety of options. This brand offers both classic and grain-free options in both their dry food and canned food lines, plus they have an assortment of treats as well. A review of several recipes reveals the use of quality ingredients like premium animal proteins, digestible carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Many recipes also include NutriSource’s exclusive “Good 4 Life” system which incorporates a variety of beneficial supplements to help promote healthy digestion, beautiful skin and coat, improved digestibility, and improved immune function. All in all, NutriSource is a decent quality brand if you are looking for a healthy dog food that won’t break the bank.

  2. I’m pretty sure Nutri Source dry dog food started making my small dog sick! I had noticed prior to this he started turning his nose up at it but ate it anyway! Then he started having full blown diarrea & throwing up! Once off this food he hasnt had anymore trouble! He had two episodes, the first which required vet. intervention! The 2nd, while we were on vacation with a pet sitter! Both times we put him on chicken & rice to heal his gut then introduced the Nutri Source back in & he got sick again so now I have switched to a completely different food! No problems!

  3. I have been feeding my dog nutrisource since she was a 10 year old puppy. She loves the dry dog food and has a beautiful shiny glossy coat. She looks beautiful and is now big and strong she has never gotten sick or had diarriah while eating nutrisource.
