The Pro Pac brand markets itself as a “super premium pet food” and, as such, they are dedicated to producing high-quality pet products that offer complete and balanced nutrition. This company is owned by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. which is a family-owned company based out of Evansville, Indiana. Their website provides very little information about the brand in general except to say that “you can be confident that you are giving your pet the best when you feed Pro Pac”. It does look like the brand has a commitment to quality in terms of their products and the website states that their recipes are designed with input from experts in the field of pet nutrition.

Pro Pac Recalls 2023:

The brand is not one of the largest or one of the most recognizable pet food brands, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worthy of your consideration. This brand is manufactured by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. which is the parent company of Earthborn Holistic, another high-quality pet food brand. Midwestern Pet Foods has three U.S.-based manufacturing facilities so it can be assumed that their products are made here in the United States. Their website doesn’t provide much information about the brand and there is no research to suggest that the brand has ever been recalled.

The Adult Chunk recipe is made with high-quality chicken as the first ingredient and it is supplemented with healthy nutrients to support strong bones and joints, firm stools, and a shiny coat. The Performance Puppy recipe is made with extra calories and protein to fuel the healthy growth and development of puppies under 12 months of age. The High Performance recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional and energy needs of active and working breeds. It is made with 35% protein and 35% fat, featuring quality ingredients like chicken meal, ground flaxseed, and chelated minerals.

Is this Food Good for my Dog?

It is difficult to judge the quality of the brand because their website doesn’t provide much in the way of useful information. The brand markets itself as a “super premium” pet food brand, but claims like this are not closely regulated. It is a good thing that their products have never been recalled, but the website does not provide specific information about where their ingredients are sourced or how they are manufactured. This brand is owned by Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. which is a family-owned company based out of Evansville, Indiana and it can be assumed that their products are made in the United States. A quick review of several products reveals a mixed bag of ingredients. There are some quality additions like chicken meal and chicken fat, but also questionable ingredients like ground yellow corn and dried beet pulp. Overall, they seem to be an average-quality brand of food at best.

Dry Food: When it comes to their dry food products, they do not offer much variety. There are four different products to choose from, though the adult recipe comes in regular and small kibbles. Their dry foods seem to be focused around chicken meal as the primary source of protein with low-quality grains and fillers as the primary carbohydrates. These recipes meet AAFCO requirements for nutritional balance but they only offer mid-range quality, at best. Here is a list of dry recipes:

  • Adult Chunk Recipe
  • Adult Mini Chunk Recipe
  • Performance Puppy Recipe
  • High Performance Recipe

Canned Food: They currently only offers dry food formulas and their website does not state whether they plan to offer canned products in the future.

Dog Treats: In addition to a limited selection of dry food products, they also offers several kinds of treats. Their treats come in a variety of flavors and they are packaged in convenient, resealable pouches. Here is a list of  dog treats:

  • Beef-Flavored Woof ‘Em Down Sticks
  • Bacon Jerky Strips
  • Smoky Sausage Bites
  • Chick ‘N Sticks
  • Chick ‘N Strips
  • Chick ‘n Chunks
  • Nut ‘R Nipz

Adult Chunk Dry Food Formula Review:

This Adult Chunk Dry Food Formula is described as a super premium formula that is specially designed to meet the nutritional needs of the normally active dog. This recipe features high-quality chicken meal as the primary ingredient, combined with chicken fat and digestible carbohydrates. The nutrition this recipe delivers is said to provide for strong bones, excellent muscle tone, shiny coat and healthy skin, and firm, consistent stools. According to the their website, this recipe contains no by-products and it is naturally preserved. Plus, like every formula, it is 100% guaranteed.

As promised, chicken meal is the primary ingredient in this recipe and the only source of protein. Chicken meal is a concentrated source of protein, especially in comparison to fresh chicken. Fresh meats like chicken contain up to 80% moisture by volume – this means that once the food is cooked, most of that moisture is lost and the total volume of that ingredient becomes significantly less. Chicken meal, however, is already cooked so its volume won’t change. Because it is the only source of protein in this recipe it is a good thing that chicken meal is used, not fresh chicken.

After the chicken meal comes ground yellow corn – the primary source of carbohydrate in this recipe. Not only is corn a common food allergen, but it is high in calories and low in nutritional value for dogs – it is also difficult for some dogs to digest. Rice flour and dried beet pulp are included as supplementary carbohydrates and as sources of dietary fiber. It is unclear whether it is white or brown rice flour (this influences the nutrient content) and dried beet pulp is sometimes considered a low-quality ingredient. For fats, chicken fat is the primary source and an excellent ingredient. Chicken fat provides a concentrated source of energy and it helps balance out the omega-3 fatty acids provided by the flaxseed. The flaxseed provides some dietary fiber and plant protein as well.

The remaining ingredients in the Adult Chunk Dry Food Formula consist primarily of nutrient supplements and flavorings. It is always better to see natural sources for key nutrients in a quality dog food recipe, but it is good that this formula contains several chelated minerals. Chelated minerals have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. This recipe does not contain probiotics, an ingredient which is usually included in quality pet food products. It is also worth noting that this recipe contains 535 calories per cup – that is extremely high for a dry kibble. This could be related to the 15% fat content but it is more likely due to the use of ground yellow corn – this ingredient is high in calories but low in nutrients.

Overall, this Adult Chunk Dry Food Formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 15%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.7%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.45%
  • Calorie Content – 535 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

All things considered, they appear to be an average quality brand at best. Although the brand markets itself as a “super premium pet food” it is important to note that claims like this are not closely regulated by the FDA. If you take a look at the ingredients list for several of their products, you will find a mixture of quality proteins like chicken meal and healthy fats like chicken fat. You will also find, however, an assortment of low-quality ingredients and non-nutritive fillers like ground yellow corn, dried beet pulp, and yeast culture. It is also worth noting that their website doesn’t provide specifics about where their ingredients come from or how their products are manufactured – they just make general claims about safety and quality. Overall, Pro Pac seems to be a mid-quality brand – you could certainly do better for your dog, but you could also do worse.

  1. I just change over dog food so far my dogs leave the old food to eat the new ..they seem to like it alot only after go back to finish their old food mix with the new but I see how they like the new right away ..

  2. I’ve found the Adult chuck to be a dark food in color and my dogs really like it. They produce a good tootsie roll type stool. I accidentally bought the Adult mini chunck and it’s light in color and my dogs don’t really like it. They produce puddles of stool…… aren’t these the same product just a different size kibble ?
    I’m a little disappointed.
