According to the brand website, Nutrish products are inspired by real recipes from Rachael’s kitchen. The website also states that a key ingredient in all of Rachael’s recipes is love – whether she is “creating recipes for her human friends or her furry friends”. Their products are made with fresh, natural ingredients because Rachael would never make a recipe using ingredients she wouldn’t eat herself. That is why Nutrish products are made with simple, high-quality ingredients that combine to deliver complete and balanced nutrition. Every recipe is taste-tested by dogs and cats and they are designed with input from Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, a company with more than 80 years of experience crafting quality food products.

Not only are Nutrish products inspired by some of Rachael’s favorite recipes, but they are all made with fresh, simple and real ingredients. Their products are formulated around high-quality proteins like chicken, beef, and seafood as well as novel proteins like lamb meal and bison. They use only lean, easily digestible proteins to ensure high nutritional value for your dog. Wholesome veggies act as natural sources for key nutrients and healthy fats help to keep your dog’s coat shiny and his skin healthy. For dogs with special dietary needs, they also offers grain-free and limited-ingredient recipes. These formulas offer the same level of quality as every other product, they are just formulated a little bit differently.

Is this Food Good for my Dog?

The Nutrish brand is marketed as being super-premium and all-natural, but you cannot always believe what a brand says about itself on their website. It is definitely a good thing that this brand is produced by a family-owned company in the United States and it also helps that no  food products have been recalled. In order to truly evaluate the quality of the brand, however, you have to take a look at their ingredients, their manufacturing process, and the quality of their products. The website states that Nutrish products are “made with natural ingredients like real meat and wholesome veggies with added vitamins and minerals” and a quick review of several products reveals this to be true. Overall, the brand seems to be a high-quality brand of food.

Rachael Ray Super Premium Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe Review:

This Super Premium Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe dry food is described as a “super premium” product made with real U.S. farm-raised chicken as the number-1 ingredient. This recipe is made with fresh, simple, and natural ingredients in a formula that is guaranteed to not only meet but exceed your dog’s nutritional requirements. This Nutrish recipe is supplemented with wholesome veggies plus vitamins and minerals to ensure nutritional completeness. It is free from poultry by-product meals, wheat ingredients, and non-nutritive fillers – it is also free from artificial flavors and preservatives. As an added bonus, this recipe contains prebiotics to support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion. What more could you ask for?

As promised, the first ingredient in this Super Premium Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe dry food recipe is real chicken. The Nutrish website states that this chicken has been raised on U.S. farms which means that it is a high-quality ingredient. What you need to remember about fresh meats, however, is that they contain up to 80% moisture by volume. When the whole product is cooked to a moisture level of 12% (as per the guaranteed analysis), the actual volume of protein that this ingredient contributes could be much lower. You will notice, however, that chicken meal is the second ingredient. Meat meals are simply fresh meats that have been cooked to remove moisture – this makes it a highly concentrated source of protein for your dog. Supplementary protein sources included in this recipe include dehydrated alfalfa and, to some degree, soybean meal.

The primary carbohydrates used in this recipe include ground rice, soybean meal, and whole grain corn. While all of these are gluten-free carbohydrates, they are not grain-free – this could be a problem for dogs that suffer from food allergies and sensitivities. The Nutrish website states that brown rice is an excellent source of wholesome fiber and essential B vitamins but it doesn’t say anything about the soybean meal or the whole grain corn. Corn is a common food allergen for dogs and it provides very limited nutritional value so it is somewhat troubling to see it included in this recipe. Supplementary carbohydrates include dried plain beet pulp, brown rice, corn gluten meal, dried peas, and dried carrots. The peas and carrots provide natural sources for key nutrients and the dried beet pulp provides wholesome fiber and prebiotics, according to the brand website.

The remaining ingredients in this Super Premium Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe dry food recipe consist primarily of fats, flavoring, and supplements. The main source of fat in this recipe is chicken fat which, while it may not sound appetizing to you, is a concentrated source of energy for dogs and a valuable addition to this recipe. Olive oil is included as a supplementary fat which helps with the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid, though another animal fat would be more biologically valuable. The vitamin and mineral supplements help to balance out the nutritional content of this recipe and, while they are good additions, natural sources are always better. It also wouldn’t hurt to see some chelated minerals and dried fermentation products (probiotics) included in this recipe.

Overall, this Super Premium Real Chicken & Veggies Recipe dry food has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 12%
  • Zinc (Min) – 250 mg/kg
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 225 IU/kg
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.1%
  • Phosphorous (Min) – 0.9%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 1.5%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.1%
  • Calorie Content – 329 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, Rachael Ray’s Nutrish brand appears to offer high nutritional quality for dogs in all life stages. Not only are the different flavor options inspired by some of Rachael’s favorite recipes, but they are made with fresh, simple ingredients in formulas that are complete and balanced. The Nutrish brand may not offer as much variety as other dog food brands, but there are an assortment of classic formulas as well as grain-free and limited-ingredient options. Not only with Nutrish products do good for your dog, but all proceeds from the brand go to animal charities and rescue efforts around the country. For both of these reasons, you can feel good about feeding your dog Rachael Ray Nutrish products.
