The TikiPets Company markets itself as a gourmet pet food brand, offering a number of products that feature fresh, wholesome ingredients that mimic the natural diets of wild cats and dogs. According to the brand website, Tiki was the first company to offer true gourmet pet foods and they offer a range of different products including grain-free options and recipes made with human-grade sliced and whole shredded meats. This company is based in Charleston, Illinois and is owned by the Hackett family so their products have a unique homemade feel. Tiki’s cat food products are formulated around various premium proteins like ahi tuna and wild salmon, designed to follow a biologically appropriate approach to pet nutrition.

Where is Tiki Cat Food Made?

Petropics Gourmet Whole Foods, the company that produces the Tiki Cat brand, is a family-owned company based in Charleston, Illinois. Both the cat food and dog food lines are owned and distributed in the United States, but the products are actually made in Thailand. According to Petropics, all of their products are manufactured in “award-winning human-grade canning plants” using high-quality ingredients, though this is difficult to qualify.

Are There Any Recalls for Tiki Cat Food in 2024?

The fact that Tiki Cat products are manufactured outside of the United States might raise a red flag for some cat owners. You have to keep in mind, however, that the quality of the ingredients is equally important to where the product is made and Tiki Cat products are made from fresh, wholesome ingredients to create biologically appropriate diets for cats. It also bodes well for Tiki Cat that the company has not been affected by any recalls. This helps to support the brand’s claim that all of its products are manufactured in human-grade facilities.

Wet Cat Food Recipe Review: Tiki Cat Hana Luau Ahi Tuna with Crab in Tuna Consommé

This gourmet canned food recipe is made with wild-caught ahi tuna loin that has been flaked and mixed with shredded wild crab meat for a protein-rich formula. The ingredients are simmered in a flavorful crab consommé broth to impart a rich, natural flavor that your cat will find irresistible. In addition to being protein-rich, this formula is grain-free and zero carb, made with wild-caught and sustainable ingredients. This product is available in two different sizes – 2.8-ounce and 6-ounce cans.

The first ingredient in this Tiki Cat Hana Luau Ahi Tuna with Crab in Tuna Consommé is flaked ahi tuna which supports the high-protein claims made by the TikiPets Company for this recipe. This ingredient is followed by tuna consommé and flaked crab. All three of these ingredients are excellent additions because, not only are the ahi tuna and flaked crab rich in protein, but simmering these ingredients in the tuna consommé imparts a rich natural flavor. The next ingredient is sunflower seed oil which is the primary source of fat for this recipe. This ingredient helps to provide omega fatty acids, though it would be better to see an animal-based fat as the primary fat. Tuna fish oil does appear further down on the ingredients list but there is a note saying that the whole recipe contains less than 1%.

Aside from the four main ingredients, this recipe contains a mixture of vitamin and mineral supplements to help ensure nutritional balance. It is always good to see healthy supplements in a quality pet food product, but it is worth noting that synthetic supplements are less biologically valuable than natural sources for the same nutrients (such as fresh fruits and vegetables). This recipe could benefit from some chelated minerals as well – these are mineral supplements that have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your cat’s body to digest and absorb. Finally, this recipe is also missing prebiotics and probiotics which could improve your cat’s digestion – these usually come in the form of dried fermentation products but are absent from this recipe.

This Tiki Cat Hana Luau Ahi Tuna with Crab in Tuna Consommé recipe has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 18.4%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 2.3%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 0.0%
  • Moisture (Max) – 77%
  • Taurine (Min) – 0.2%
  • Calcium (Min) – 0.3%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.3%
  • Calorie Content – 221 per 6-ounce can

This recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. To feed your cat this recipe, offer 1 can per 4.5 pounds of bodyweight per day, ideally dividing it into two meals. Growing kittens may require up to twice this amount and pregnant or lactating female cats may need two to four times this amount. For adult cats, follow the feeding recommendations for several weeks while keeping an eye on your cat’s bodyweight and condition. If your cat appears to be gaining an unhealthy amount of weight, you may need to scale back his daily portion a little bit. For cats that lose weight or become lethargic, consider increasing the daily portion. This product should be fed at room temperature and any uneaten portion should be refrigerated.

Tiki Canned Cat Food Recipe Rating: 4/5 stars

This Tiki Cat canned food recipe features premium proteins like ahi tuna and flaked crab cooked in a naturally flavorful broth. It is completely grain-free and carb-free which is great for cats, though it could benefit from some natural sources for key nutrients or, at the very least, chelated minerals supplements and added probiotics. Overall, however, this recipes the minimum nutritional requirements for cats in all life stages, though both the protein and fat content could be a little higher.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the TikiPets cat food brand is a decent option if your cat prefers canned food to dry kibble. Many of this company’s recipes are made with human-grade ingredients in protein-rich, naturally flavored formulas. TikiPets markets their products as gourmet whole food and, while they do use many quality ingredients, most of their recipes require supplementation to ensure complete and balanced nutrition. This brand could benefit from more natural sources for key nutrients as well as the addition of chelated minerals and probiotics. What bodes well for this brand is the fact that they do not use any low-quality grains or fillers and, even though their products are manufactured in Thailand, they have not been subject to any recalls to date. You can feel good about feeding your cat Tiki Cat canned food as a supplemental option but you should be careful about using recipes that contain large fish as a primary source of nutrition because they may have high mercury content.

  1. I’d been feeding Tiki wet foods (in the 3oz packets) to my cat for two years when I discovered hard, sharp fish bones 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in length. For the remaining packets I am searching them with a toothpick before feeding, and when the packets run out in a few days, I won’t buy Tiki anymore.

  2. I’ve been feeding my cats tiki cat in the small 3 oz cans for many years, and never once found a bone!

  3. My cat would not eat TikiCat …..had no interest, walked away……and he LOVES to eat. Oh well, it looked good to me!!

    1. My cat did exactly the same , he loves to eat and when I gave him the Tiki cat food, he sniffed it and walked away. Never ate anything the rest of the night till the morning when I threw it out. First time I saw him rather starve than eat that stuff.
