ZiwiPeak Air-Dried Venison Dog Cuisine Formula Review:

This Air-Dried Venison Dog Cuisine Formula is a nutrient-rich, high-protein formula that is complete and balanced for dogs in all life stages. According to their website, this formula “starts with 92% premium New Zealand venison meat, organs, and bone”, formulated to patch the whole-prey type of diet that wild dogs have followed for centuries. This recipe is ideal for dogs that have skin and coat problems as well as dogs that have food allergies or sensitivities to other types of protein. Because this recipe is supplemented with green-lipped mussels for bone and joint-supporting nutrients (glucosamine and chondroitin), it is particularly beneficial for large- and giant-breed dogs who have a higher risk for musculoskeletal issues. All in all, this recipe is extremely high in protein and natural flavor so your dog is sure to love it.

As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is venison meat and it is followed by venison liver, lung, tripe, heart, and kidney. One thing you should be aware of is that venison is a fresh meat which means that it may contain up to 80% moisture by volume. This can sometimes be a problem in traditional kibble recipes because the cooking process removes most of that moisture, leaving a much lower volume of protein. Because this recipe is air-dried, however, (and there is plenty of supplemental protein from the venison organ meats) you don’t have to worry about this. The air-drying process does remove moisture but it doesn’t rob the fresh meat of its nutritional integrity – it basically turns the venison meat into venison meal which is simply a concentrated source of animal protein. All in all, this recipe contains 34% crude protein minimum, so you have nothing to worry about.

After the venison and organ meats comes New Zealand green mussels, a supplementary source of protein and a natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin. This ingredient is followed by inulin from chicory, dried kelp, and parsley. All three of these ingredients provide some dietary fiber for your dog in a very digestible form. Overall, this recipe contains 1.6% fiber which is much lower than the traditional kibble, but that is not necessarily a problem. Carnivores like dogs have a limited ability to digest plant materials so a low fiber content is a good thing. The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist primarily of extracts and supplements. All of these are valuable additions to this recipe, though it wouldn’t hurt to see some fresh fruits and vegetables as natural sources for key vitamins or chelated minerals. This recipe could also benefit from some dried fermentation products which act as probiotics.

Overall, this Air-Dried Venison Dog Cuisine Formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 34%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.6%
  • Moisture (Max) – 15%
  • Calorie Content – 269 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, ZiwiPeak can be considered a high-quality brand of food that produces nutrient-rich, protein-dense recipes without any fancy bells and whistles. This is a brand of food that you can count on to provide premium-quality nutrition through the use of fresh, natural ingredients. Not only does ZiwiPeak use the best ingredients available but they also use a special two-stage air-drying process which means that their products retain their nutritional integrity and natural flavor (similar to raw food) but they are shelf-stable. ZiwiPeak may not offer as much variety as other pet food brands but you can rest easy knowing that any one of their formulas would be a good choice for your dog. Their recipes are especially beneficial for dogs with food allergies and sensitivities because they are made with novel protein sources and grain-free carbohydrates. All in all, your dog would be lucky to enjoy any of ZiwiPeak’s air-dried or moist food products.

  1. I have been feeding my dog ziwipeak for about 6 months. He is the pickiest dog I have ever had and for a while I was literally making his food with the addition of Honest Kitchen base mix. We have tried OVER 100 types of food and now I’m at a loss again with ziwipeak. For some reason, the last batch of ziwipeak I purchased was dry and mealy. Also, I have noticed HORRIBLE gas smell and I can’t help but notice that he has declined eating his food. The company stopped selling the 11 lb that was a little more affordable per lb. ziwipeak, what is going on?! My dog can tell the difference and so can I…

  2. My boxer is allergic to everthing except ziwipeak. I’ve been looking online for coupons because I’m retired and over $150.00 a month for dog food is killing me. I can’t even spend that much on me, hahahahaha. Some coupons please.
    And thank you,
    Anna

  3. I used Ziwi Peak with no issues at all until they changed their formula in 2017 – It was at the same time the stopped selling the 11 lb bag.
Now it is so hard you can not even break it between your fingers. The other formula was softer.
Since then I have had three episodes with this formula where my 50 lb dog has had hiccup type of behavior after eating it. The first time I thought it was a random hiccup. The second time I decided not to feed it to him. Since then I have tried various brands – but I liked the ease of this brand. It was suggested by the shop owner that sold it that I could try soaking with water or goat’s milk as- but can you believe – even after sitting in water for a half hour – it is still rock hard?!?
Now he is so sick. Another hiccup episode and he has coughed it up and the food has gone in his lungs. It is really scary and he is on broad spectrum antibiotics and looking at month long recovery. He won’t eat or drink or even walk. The vet says he should start to improve by the second day full day on antibiotics, but it is so scary and I am so worried. I wish I had never purchased that last bag and tried the soaking method as suggested. I hope this never happens to another dog.

    1. Hi eve. Which bag of food did you buy? Im shopping for a good kibble to feed my two 4 and 7 lb chi ‘s but this review concerns me bc the 4lb doesnt have but lil teeth. Has anyone with the company addressed their concerns about what happened to your fur baby?

    1. I have been adding a small amount of ziwipeak lamb kibbles to my two 4lbs chihuahuas food. One of my dogs was getting diarrhea. It finally stopped. I ordered my second 2lb bag. They have both had diarrhea. I I mix with their old food, giving them about 1/4 ounce of ziwipeak a day. I am about to give up on this food. This has never happened before. I don’t think that they could ever handle this for their only food. They have been on grain free diet for 6 years. Something with this food is causing the diarrhea, although they love to eat the food.
