Previously known as “Breeder’s Choice”, the AvoDerm pet food brand is slowly but steadily rising through the ranks of quality pet food brands. According to the brand website, they offer premium pet foods loaded with high-quality meats, wholesome grains, and antioxidant nutrients for vitamin and mineral balance to ensure whole-body health and wellness for cats and dogs. Although the brand name has changed, they are still produced and manufactured by Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods, a leading innovator in pet product development and a favorite brand among specialty breeders and zoos. In fact, the brand is widely known as one of the purest, premium producers of natural pet foods on the market.

Breeder’s Choice initially put themselves on the map with their frozen pet meals which then expanded into a line of oven-baked foods. The brand really changed in 1982, however, when extensive research revealed the nutritional power of avocadoes as a primary ingredient in dog and cat foods. What began as an experimental product quickly developed into the brand’s biggest seller and it has since grown and expanded into an assortment of related products including life stages formulas, breed-specific recipes, revolving menu products, wet foods, and even oven-baked dry foods.

In order to understand the unique nutritional benefits of these pet foods, you need to understand the benefits of avocadoes. In addition to being rich in healthy fats, avocadoes are loaded with crude fiber and essential nutrients. Full of vitamins A, C, and E, avocadoes are often called the “ACE” of the food world. These fruits are loaded with potassium, folate, and niacin as well as the fatty acids your dog needs to promote skin and coat health. In fact, this is the biggest benefit of their pet foods – they help to repair skin problems and restore health and beauty to even dull, lifeless coats. Furthermore, avocadoes are one of the most nutrient-dense foods out there and there is no end to their nutritional benefits.

AvoDerm Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula Review:

This Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula offers premium-quality, grain-free nutrition for dogs in all life stages. Like all of their recipes, this formula provides healthy, balanced nutrition for dogs through the use of wholesome, natural ingredients. This recipe is formulated to provide plenty of healthy protein with a balanced of omega fatty acids to promote healthy skin and a beautiful, luxurious coat. With the inclusion of California avocadoes, this recipe contains natural sources for more than 20 essential vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients to ensure good health from the inside out. Plus, this recipe is completely free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients in addition to being grain-free.

The first ingredient in this Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula is chicken meal and it is the only source of animal protein included in this recipe. While this might raise a red flag, there is one important thing you need to remember about this ingredient. Fresh meats (like chicken) contain up to to 80% moisture by volume. Because ingredients lists on food labels are ordered by volume prior to cooking, the actual volume of protein provided by fresh meats could be significantly less after cooking. In this recipe, however, it won’t be a problem because chicken meal has already been cooked down to a moisture level around 10% (as indicated by the guaranteed analysis) which makes it a highly concentrated source of protein that won’t change significantly in volume with cooking. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to see a secondary source of animal protein included in this recipe.

After chicken meal, the second and third ingredients are both sources of carbohydrate and dietary fiber – peas and pea flour. It is a little strange to see these ingredients split, but it is a common practice in the pet food industry. Peas are a gluten-free and grain-free source of digestible carbohydrates and dietary fiber, plus they contain some plant protein as well. Other sources of grain-free carbohydrate used in this recipe include garbanzo beans (also known as chickpeas), potatoes, dried tomato pomace, and alfalfa meal. It is also important to note that the avocado that is featured in this recipe contains high levels of crude fiber as well as other nutrients. The sheer number of carbohydrate ingredients used in this Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula is a little bit concerning but since the crude protein content is still below 5% it doesn’t seem to be a problem.

In addition to providing plenty of animal protein and digestible carbohydrate, this recipe is also rich in healthy fats. The primary source of fat in this recipe appears in the fourth slot of the ingredients list – chicken fat. While this may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is a highly valuable source of concentrated energy and essential fatty acids for your dog. This recipe also includes flaxseed, a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids which helps to balance out the total fatty acid content. Together with the fat-rich avocado, these ingredients contribute to a healthy balance of essential fatty acids in this Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula which is sure to promote your dog’s skin and coat health as well as immune system health.

Aside from the protein, fat, and carbohydrate ingredients in this Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula, there are a few other ingredients worth noting. It is important to note that many of the mineral supplements here are chelated. It is always best to see natural sources for vitamins and minerals (the avocado contains plenty) but if synthetic supplements are included, they should be chelated. Chelated minerals are those that have been chemically bound to protein molecules, making them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. The final ingredient worth noting is the dried fermentation product. These act as probiotics to help promote healthy and regular digestion.

Overall, this Grain-Free Chicken Meal & Potato Formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 28%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 13%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 125 IU/kg
  • Ascorbic Acid (Min) – 25 mg/kg
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 1.9%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.4%
  • Calorie Content – 370 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, this is a high-quality pet food brand that offers an assortment of health and nutritional benefits. AvoDerm focuses its recipes on the nutritional power of quality ingredients such as fresh meats, wholesome grains, and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Another benefit that this brand offers its customers is a wide assortment of products that cater to dogs in different life stages – there is a variety of products for puppies, adult dogs, senior dogs, and even dogs of different sizes. Each and every product is designed to provide premium-quality nutrition with plenty of skin and coat benefits as well. According to the brand website, their products help “pets shine with good health from the inside out”.

  1. I have been told that Avocados is one food that should not be given to dogs, yet it is an ingredient in your food.
This is a concern to me.

There has been a lot of misinformation on dogs and avocados but the meat of an avocado actually has many health benefits for dogs. Only the peel and pit need to be avoided.

Also you can find statements from the ASPCA and Pet Poison Healthline that confirms that this is a misconception; the fruit of avocados are safe for dogs and cats. You can find more info here http://www.aspca.org/…/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/avocado And on http://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/poison/avocado/

      Hope this information helps!
