Breeder’s Choice Dog Food Reviews, Coupons and Recalls 2017

The dog food brand known as Breeder’s Choice actually encompasses several food brands, all of which are produced and manufactured by the Central Garden & Pet Company. According to their website, this company understands the importance of cultivating a positive relationship with pets and that relationship starts by feeding your pet a high-quality diet. Central Garden & Pet Company is a leading innovator in the field of natural pet foods and they make it their goal to provide consumers with “high-quality, innovative products that simplify and beautiful outdoor living spaces and create fun and healthy interaction with pets”. Simply put, they make it their mission to provide the high-quality, nutritious diets that pets deserve.

This brand was launched in 1947 with the creation of frozen pet meals. In 1960, they expanded to include an assortment of oven-baked kibbles and dog biscuits. Not only were these products completely novel at the time, but they met and exceeded the minimum pet food nutritional requirements in effect at the time – they were specifically designed to be the most nutritious pet products available. Over the next few years, the company added a bakery to its production facility, a facility which is still used to this day to produce the company’s all-natural oven-baked pet food products and treats. This is just one example of the brand’s commitment to quality and nutrition.

In 1982, the company expanded yet again, launching a new brand of dog and cat food called AvoDerm which harnesses the nutritional power of fresh California avocadoes. In addition to providing complete and balanced nutrition, AvoDerm pet food products are loaded with essential fatty acids to help improve coat condition while also addressing skin problems. Another pet food brand that they controls is the Pinnacle Holistic Pet Nutrition Company. This brand maintains a holistic approach to animal nutrition, offering high-quality pet food products designed with limited ingredients to ensure complete and balanced nutrition while also reducing the risk for food allergies.

While AvoDerm and Pinnacle are the two largest brands offered by this brand, there are two others worth noting – Advanced Pet Diets and Active Care. The Advance Pet Diets brand is designed to provide complete and balanced nutrition for dogs in all life stages, using premium-quality ingredients in carefully researched formulas. The Active Care line of pet foods contains two recipes, both of which are designed to offer joint support for dogs. Both of these recipes are fortified with glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as well as other key nutrients to ensure complete and balanced nutrition.

Breeders Recalls 2017:

Breeder’s Choice food is produced and manufactured by the Central Garden & Pet Company which is a leading innovator and producer of quality pet food products. In addition to offering a wide selection of dog and cat foods, Central Garden & Pet Company offers pet care products, cages, carriers, and more. They have been producing and manufacturing pet food products for more than six decades, so it should come as no surprise that the company has had to deal with a few minor recalls along the way. Here are the details of those recalls:

  • In April 2013, Breeder’s Choice issued a voluntary recall for a single batch of its Active Care Healthy Joint Treats due to possible mold contamination.
  • In September 2012, the FDA issued a recall for 26-pound bags of AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula due to potential salmonella contamination.

There have not been any recalls (FDA-issued or voluntary) known to affect either the Advance Pet Diets and Active Care brands of dog food.

Each and every one of their all-natural formulas is designed to ensure total health and wellbeing for pets. Is this food Good for my Dog?

The answer to this question is not a simple “Yes” or “No” because the name applies to four different pet food brands. The best way to answer this question is to review each brand individually. On the whole, the AvoDerm food brand appears to offer excellent quality both in terms of nutrition and natural flavor. The Pinnacle brand of pet food is entirely grain-free and designed with a limited number of ingredients to help reduce the risk for food allergies and sensitivities. A quick review of this brand reveals the use of high-quality and nutritious ingredients, all without the use of artificial additives. The Advanced Pet Diets line of dog foods includes only two recipes but they are supplemented with plenty of fatty acids and other natural ingredients without the use of artificial additives. The Active Care brand also only offers two recipes, both of which are protein-rich and highly digestible for dogs.

Breeder’s Choice Dry: All four brands offer an assortment of dry food options, though AvoDerm offers the greatest variety. When it comes to AvoDerm dry food, there are thirty different recipes to choose from across eight different formulas. Simply put, AvoDerm has a product for every need whether your dog is a growing puppy, a mature adult, or an overweight dog. Pinnacle dry foods come in six grain-free formulas, all of which are made with a limited number of ingredients to help reduce food allergies and sensitivities – they are also formulated for dogs in all life stages. Advanced Pet Diet dry foods are designed to promote healthy skin and coat in a nutritious, highly digestible formula. The Active Care line includes just two dry food options – Chicken Meal and Lamb Meal – both of which are fortified with glucosamine and chondroitin for joint support.

The AvoDerm brand offers fourteen different canned food products for dogs which are divided among several product lines for adults, puppies, and vegetarian dogs as well as options for weight control and grain-free recipes. Pinnacle canned foods come in the same formulas that are available in dry food form with the exception of the Peak Protein formula – they are all gluten-free and grain-free. The Advanced Pet Diets brand does not offer any canned food formulas for dogs or cats.

Oven-Baked: In addition to a number of dry food and wet food formulas offered across all four of their brands, the AvoDerm brand offers another option – oven-baked food. These formulas are slow-baked in small batches to ensure nutritional quality and safety – it also helps to promote healthy digestion. There are three different oven-baked AvoDerm food formulas: Lamb & Brown Rice, Original Formula with Beef Meal, and Original Formula with Beef Meal Small Bites. As is true for all of AvoDerm’s products, these recipes also feature fresh avocado.

AvoDerm Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula Review:

The AvoDerm Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula is one of their adult food recipes made available through the AvoDerm brand. This formula is made with premium quality ingredients without the use of any corn, wheat, or soy – it is also free from artificial additives like colors, flavors, and preservatives. In addition to plenty of healthy antioxidants to support your dog’s immune system, this recipe is also fortified with fresh avocado to boost his skin and coat health. According to the AvoDerm website, this recipe “provides healthy balanced nutrition for your adult dog” and “high quality ingredients ensure that you are providing the optimal nutrition your pet needs”. All in all, it appears to be a high-quality recipe loaded with healthy ingredients.

In order to truly evaluate the quality of this AvoDerm Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula, you need to start with the ingredients list. The first ingredient listed is chicken meal which is followed by whole brown rice, whole white rice, and oatmeal. Chicken meal is an excellent ingredient to see at the top of an ingredients list – especially if it is the only protein source listed within the top ten ingredients. While you may think that fresh chicken would be a better ingredient to start with, this is not necessarily true. Fresh meats like chicken contain up to 80% moisture by volume – this means that the actual volume of protein provided by fresh meats could be significantly less after cooking to remove moisture. Chicken meal, on the other hand, has already been cooked to remove water which makes it a highly concentrated source of protein and an excellent first ingredient.

After the chicken meal comes three sources of digestible carbohydrates – whole brown rice, whole white rice, and oatmeal. While these ingredients may not be grain-free, they are gluten-free which reduces the risk that they might trigger food allergies or sensitivities in your dog. The inclusion of three carbohydrate ingredients might seem like a red flag but if you check the guaranteed analysis you will see that the total fiber content is only 4% which is well within the acceptable range for dogs. It is also worth noting that whole grains like rice and oatmeal are more digestible and biologically valuable for dogs than gluten-containing grains and low-quality fillers like corn and wheat ingredients. This recipe also contains tomato pomace as an additional source of fiber.

In addition to being rich in protein and digestible carbohydrates, this recipe also contains plenty of healthy fats. Chicken fat (the fifth ingredient) is the primary source of fat and it is a high-quality source because animal-based fats have high bio-availability for dogs. The chicken fat is supplemented by the avocado and flaxseed which appear later in the list. Flaxseed is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and the avocado is rich in an assortment of healthy fats. Together, these fats help to boost your dog’s immune system health and improve skin and coat health. Other ingredients worth noting include the dried fermentation products and chelated minerals. Chelated minerals are those that have been chemically bound to protein molecules, making them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb and dried fermentation products act as probiotics to help promote healthy and regular digestion.

Overall, this AvoDerm Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 23%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 13%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.49%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.78%
  • Calorie Content – 360 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Overall, this food brand deserves a place among the ranks of premium pet food products. While each of the four brands is different, they all appear to offer quality nutrition and they are all made with high-quality, natural ingredients. Each brand appeals to a different kind of dog. The AvoDerm brand is great for all dogs but especially for dogs with skin problems while the Active Care line is ideal for dogs with joint problems. The Advanced Pet Diets brand appears to be on the way out, but the two formulas available are properly balanced and made with decent ingredients. The Pinnacle brand is entirely grain-free and made with fresh, natural ingredients to ensure quality nutritional and plenty of natural flavor. All in all, your dog would be lucky to receive any of the food products they have to offer.

I would like to know why it was necessary to stop selling Pinnacle dry dog food on the east coast. Chewy did not let me know this until today (5/2/17) as I had the Trout and Sweet Potato Holistic Dry Dog food on autoship. Now I have to rush around and try to find another dog food with both white fish and sweet potato ASAP, and that won’t be easy!

I was told by a dog food specialty store owner that this was his #1 best selling dry dog food. Why on earth would you not provide a way for us to continue to buy it online? In this day and age, a decision to just drop a guaranteed group of customers is just stupid. It’s called ‘Customer NO Service’. It’s called ‘I will not be trying any of your other products’.
