We’re also going to be looking at what we think are the best Pugle shampoos on the market in our review section where we provide 7 excellent product recommendations that do everything a good Pugle shampoo should do (and more).
Let’s get started.
What To Look For In A Good Pugle Shampoo
There’s nothing specific you should be looking for in a Pugle shampoo that makes the requirements here different to any other breed. The only exception to this is perhaps that you should maybe look for a low tear gentle formula, as you might need to give the inside of the creases on their face a little extra cleaning and attention (because they can get dirty and are perfect breeding grounds for bacteria).
How Often Should I Bathe A Pugle?
Once a month is the recommended bathing schedule for soap based products. The reasonably harsh nature of soap means that if you use them more than this you could cause irritation and skin issues may occur.
Natural products that don’t use soap can usually be used as often as you like (but be sure to read the label). This makes them perfect for sensitive dogs, or particularly mucky pups that need to be bathed more often than normal.
4 Pugle Bathing Tips
Here are a few Pugle bathing tips that we recommend you take into account to make bathing your little ball of joy a bit easier for the both of you.
- Use The Sink – Because our little Pugles are so small, you might be better off using the sink to bathe them in instead of the bathtub. This is more pleasant for your pooch because they’re not placed inside an unfamiliar large cavernous space (your bathtub) and it feels more natural to them. It’s also better for you because you can work at waist height instead of kneeling down and bending over the bathtub.
- Put Cotton Wool In Their Ears – Because you’re going to need to use shampoo inside the creases of your Pugle’s face, you’re going to have to rinse them off well too. This means that you have a higher risk of getting water in your dog’s ear canal – which can cause infection. By putting cotton wool in their ears you are minimizing the amount of water that can get inside. Just remember to remove the cotton wool afterward…
- Dry Them Well – It’s important that you dry the creases in your Pugle’s face properly. The enclosed warm nature of these creases makes them perfect breeding grounds for bacteria. You should dry them individually very well after each bath to prevent microbes from breeding and creating smells. You should also be doing this when they go into the pool, river, sea, or any other body of water too.
- Use Wipes – Keeping on top of the wrinkles in a Pugle’s face is a full-time job. You should consider investing in specialist wipes and regularly clean the inside of each crease to reduce the amount of bacteria that forms in-between washes. Be sure to use alcohol-free wipes, as they can cause irritation and redness – which is obviously less than ideal.
Overall Best Pugle Shampoo
While there were several great products that we think would be perfect for Pugles (which we will talk about later) the best shampoo on the market right now in our opinion is this brilliant product from Earthbath.
This is a product that has been specifically made for pooches that have dry and damaged skin, but it’s suitable for use on all dogs – regardless of how healthy their skin is. It’s a soap-free shampoo, which means it can be used as often as you like without causing rashes or irritations that the strong pH of soap based products can cause.
Because this is a soap-free product it could potentially mean that it’s going to lack a little bit of power in the cleaning and deodorizing departments – but that’s not the case. This product uses oatmeal, which is one of the best natural cleaners and cleansers mother nature has provided us with. It will remove dirt and debris with ease, and all the bacteria that cause your dog to stink are going to have a very bad time when they come into contact with this stuff.
It’s also a hydrating shampoo that will help soothe and repair any rashes caused by allergies or itchiness thanks to the aloe vera that has been generously infused into this product. It’s also well suited to be used with dogs that are undergoing treatment for fleas and ticks, as it won’t wash off the protection they have previously had applied (although the shampoo won’t provide any protection against pests on its own).
There’s a lovely scent to this product that has a light almond and vanilla smell to it – your pooch is going to smell like they’ve just walked out of an ice cream factory (and we love it). It’s a multi-species shampoo too, which is an added bonus if you’ve got cats in your home – as you can use it on both canines and felines without causing any harm.
It’s a great product from a great brand, and as it only costs around $8 for a 16oz bottle, it’s great value for money too. There are not many products on the market that can provide this kind of performance (without using soap) at this kind of price. We strongly recommend you give it some serious thought and add it to the top of your shortlist.
Pros And Cons
- Great brand with a great reputation
- Almond and vanilla scent
- Oatmeal kills bacteria and removes odors
- Soothes raw and itchy skin
- Good value for money
- Can be used on cats and dogs
Best Shampoo For A Pugle With Allergies
If you’ve got a Pugle that needs a little bit of extra care and attention due to skin issues or allergies, then choosing a medicated shampoo is going to help their suffering slightly. This is a great product from Synergy Labs that we strongly recommend for Pugles with allergies.
This is a semi-medical product that has a very specific set of instructions. You need to use it twice weekly at first to treat any issues that may be present. Once your pooch has been healed you then use it once a week to keep the issues from coming back. This does mean you’ve got to use this product long term to see permanent results, but it’s a small price to pay to have a happier and healthier Pugle.
This is a chemical-based product, and the compounds inside are complex and effective. They will simultaneously destroy the bacteria that can cause skin issues while removing any fungal infections that make your pooch a little bit smelly at the same time. There’s also a nice healthy dose of natural aloe vera inside which will soothe any existing rashes while cooling and moisturizing your dog’s skin too.
It’s more or less the same price as a normal shampoo, but you are going to be using it more often due to the recommended bathing schedule. Regardless, it’s great value for money and provides an incredible level of performance that you’re going to struggle to get from other brands. It’s more than worthy of your consideration, and if you’ve got a Pugle with allergies, it should be at the top of your shortlist.
5 More Really Good Shampoos For A Pugle
In this section, we are going to share some products with you that we saw while researching the overall recommendations we made above. They are all inferior to the products we’ve just talked about in some way (in our opinion) but they are all still great shampoos that have done well to make it into this “special mention” section. We’re pretty sure you’ll be pleased with the performance of any of them.
This is a brilliant shampoo from Earthbath who also make the product we chose as our overall recommendation above. To be honest, it’s actually a very similar product to the one we mentioned earlier, it still uses oatmeal for its cleaning power, and it’s still a natural product infused with aloe vera to soothe damaged skin.
The main thing this product has going for it is the cherry infusion that makes it smell good enough to drink. It’s also a milder formula that could be good for use with puppies or Pugles that need a proper clean around their facial creases (it’s going to cause fewer tears if it gets into their eyes). It’s a highly popular product that’s got great reviews, and if you liked the look of our overall recommendation, then we think that you should check this product out too.
This is one of the freshest and most advanced dog shampoos we have come across. It’s a highly advanced concentrated formula that uses the power of lemongrass to kill bacteria combined with the moisturizing properties of aloe vera to soothe skin.
It’s a soap-free formula that is one of the best natural products on the market in terms of odor elimination and sanitization – and the smell it leaves behind is lovely too. The only downside is that this is the most expensive product on this list (even when you take the concentrated nature of the shampoo into account). However, we still think it’s good value for money, and you’re definitely getting what you pay for with this product.
This is a natural product that uses a variety of herbs (mainly rosemary and mint) to calm your pooch down when they are in the bath. This makes it perfect for pooches that have a hard time enjoying bath time and can get a little bit anxious while being cleaned. It sounds like a gimmick, but honestly – it works.
It’s a natural formula like most the other products on this page (so there’s no soap) and it uses the power of wheat protein to clean and deodorize – which is as effective as (or more effective than) the oatmeal products we have been raving about above.
This is a waterless shampoo that should be used in conjunction with any of the other products on this page. It kills bacteria and removes odors exceptionally well considering you’re not actually bathing your dog. You simply spray your pooch with this stuff and any stink they are creating will be removed (or at least drastically reduced).
It’s not a replacement for proper bathing, but it can help keep your Pugle fresher for longer, and it’s perfect for people that don’t have the time to wash a stinky pup every week.
While we like to try and recommend natural products wherever possible, no dog shampoo article is complete without at least one soap based product. You should only consider this shampoo if you know your dog doesn’t have sensitive skin or other issues…
If you think your pooch is going to be OK, then nothing can beat the cleaning power of a soap based product. This one has been specifically designed to have a neutral pH – so it’s going to be gentle on your dog’s skin while making them cleaner than ever at the same time.
So there you have it, that’s what we think are the best Pugle shampoos on the market right now.
Any of the products above are going to give you and your pooch a better bathing experience. They are all winners to have been mentioned here today, and they are all more than worthy of your consideration.
