Pretty Litter Review 2024 : Is This The Best Crystal Cat Litter?

Why We Love It

Nothing is worse for a cat owner than knowing your fur baby is sick. The trouble is many cats hide it when they aren’t feeling well, so you may not even know your cat is suffering! Internal health issues like urinary tract infections are often minor and may resolve on their own, but they can also progress over time to become very serious and even life-threatening. Pretty Litter helps cat owners keep tabs on their cat’s health by detecting changes in urinary pH as an indication of potential health issues. It’s no substitute for veterinary care, but it could make the difference between identifying and treating a health problem before it becomes serious.

Cats are naturally clean animals which is why they spend hours out of each day fastidiously grooming themselves. Their cleanly habits extend beyond their own bodies, however – they also have an instinct to cover their waste. As a cat owner, you can’t complain about that.

Any cat owner will tell you, however, that there are plenty of complaints to be made about cat litter.

On the one hand, it’s great to have a pet that discretely eliminates in a predictable location. If you’re lucky, you don’t have to deal with accidents very often and you may not even have to see the litter box except when it comes time for cleaning. Unfortunately, all cat litter is not created equal.

Cat owners have always been on the lookout for the best cat litter. What it comes down to, however, is how well any cat litter meets your individual expectations. If you’re open to trying alternatives to traditional clay-based clumping cat litter, you may find that some products out there are quite unique. Pretty Litter is on the list of products you should at the very least consider.

We tested Pretty Litter to see what this crystal cat litter is all about and whether it’s worthy of the title for best cat litter. Check out our review below and find the answers to everything you want to know!

Overview of Pretty Litter

In case it isn’t obvious from the name, Pretty Litter is a cat litter brand. This brand offers a single formula of silica gel cat litter that absorbs liquid on contact, dehydrating solid waste so it can be scooped out.

Pretty Litter is self-described in the following way:

“Pretty Litter is made of super absorbent, lightweight silica gel. Silica gel crystals are extremely absorbent, more so than other types, so you need less litter to do the same job. Our long-lasting non-clumping litter means lighter trash bags, less scooping, and fewer trips to the store.”

We’ve tested just about every cat litter on the market, so the idea of Pretty Litter was very intriguing. Crystal cat litter is one of the newer additions to the cat litter scene and very different from traditional clumping cat litter. We were eager to see what it is was. Read on to see what we thought!

A Quick History:

The Pretty Litter brand was created by Daniel Rotman. After losing his own cat to illness, Rotman created Pretty Litter to help other cat owners avoid the same heartbreak. Rotman was frustrated by his inability to recognize his cat’s illness when it was still early, which became the inspiration for Pretty Litter.

What Products Are There?

The Pretty Litter brand currently only offers two products: Pretty Litter cat litter and Pretty Please cat food. Both are available for monthly prescription. The cat food is designed to support optimal health and nutrition for your cat while the litter helps you monitor certain aspects of your cat’s health.

Pretty Litter is marketed as “the world’s smartest cat litter.” In addition to being ultra-absorbent and effective in odor control, this cat litter changes color to alert cat owners to potential health issues. The litter responds to the pH level of your cat’s urine, turning dark yellow to indicate abnormally high acidity or blue to indicate abnormal alkalinity. Red indicates blood in the urine.

Pretty Please, the dry cat food offered by Pretty Litter, is a product designed to “optimize your cat’s health with every delicious ingredient.” It features a balanced combination of essential nutrients and animal proteins to keep your cat healthy and well.

How Does Pretty Litter Work?

According to the website, Pretty Litter “keeps tabs on your cat’s health by changing color according to the pH level of their urine.” Cats are notorious for hiding weakness, so they may not let on immediately if they’re struggling with illness. Changes in behavior are a common indication but may take time to develop – Pretty Litter helps cat owners identify potential health issues much earlier.

Here are what the different colors indicate:

  • Dark Yellow/Olive Green – Typical. This indicates your cat’s urine is within the normal pH range.
  • Yellow – Acidity. This indicates your cat’s urine is more acidic than typical which is often correlated with metabolic acidosis or kidney tubular acidosis. Low urinary pH can contribute to calcium oxalate stone formation.
  • Blue – Alkaline. This indicates your cat’s urine is more alkaline than typical which is often correlated with urinary tract infections. High urinary pH can contribute to bladder crystal and stone formation.
  • Red – Blood. This indicates blood in the urine which could be linked to bladder inflammation, bladder stones, or urinary tract infection.

Pretty Litter is not intended to diagnose veterinary conditions but to help cat owners keep track of their cat’s health. A change in urine pH is a common indication for certain health issues like bladder and kidney stones which can become serious if left untreated. Using Pretty Litter may help cat owners detect these issues sooner to make sure their cat gets treatment.

In-Depth Look:

Though Pretty Litter’s primary product is their crystal cat litter, the brand now also offers a dry food recipe for cats. Featuring premium animal proteins like chicken and turkey, this formula delivers balanced nutrition for all life stages with 24 essential vitamins and minerals.

Pretty Please cat food lists three animal proteins as the top three ingredients with fish meal as a supplemental source of protein later in the list. About this, we can’t complain. Fresh chicken is the first ingredient followed by chicken and turkey meals, both concentrated sources of animal protein.

The next two ingredients are the primary carbohydrates in the formula: dried peas and chickpeas. These are gluten-free and grain-free ingredients, but they aren’t our favorite inclusions in cat food. Beans and legumes contain considerable amounts of plant protein, so manufacturers sometimes use them to boost the protein content of their recipes without adding more animal ingredients. Legumes can also be a little tricky for cats to digest and they contain phytic acid which may affect nutrient absorption.

The estimated carbohydrate content of this formula is about 20%, which isn’t too bad. Proponents of the raw food diet for cats recommend no more than 10% carbohydrates in a cat’s diet, but most dry foods are much higher. Actually, 20% is fairly low compared to others we’ve seen.

Generally speaking, Pretty Please seems to be a decent product. The protein content is very high (45% as dry matter) and the first three ingredients are animal proteins. The carbohydrate content isn’t extreme, and the number of main ingredients is fairly low.

If you’re ordering Pretty Litter for your cat and you want to try Pretty Please, we definitely recommend it. It provides balanced nutrition and doesn’t contain any major red flag ingredients.

Final Thoughts</2>

Overall, we are very impressed with Pretty Litter. We’ve tried alternatives to clumping cat litter before with mixed results. We liked that this crystal cat litter is much lighter and finer than others we’ve tried, though we did notice a decent amount of tracking. That being said, our test cats didn’t seem to have any issues with the product, though they did tend to prefer it for liquid over solid waste.

Fortunately, we didn’t really have an opportunity to test the color-changing benefits of Pretty Litter. Our test cats all indicated normal urine pH during the test period. We did notice that a single bag didn’t last a full month, but Pretty Litter does note that it will go more quickly in multi-cat households.

In the end, the cat litter you choose is largely a matter of preference. We hope you’ve learned enough about this crystal cat litter to decide whether Pretty Litter is the right choice for you and your cat.
