BLUE Freedom Grain-Free Adult Chicken Recipe Review:

According to their website, this BLUE Freedom Grain-Free Adult Chicken Recipe formula is made with the finest natural ingredients in a recipe that is completely free from gluten and grains to ensure that it won’t trigger allergic reactions or food sensitivities. This recipe is made with delicious, protein-rich deboned chicken and it is completely free from chicken and poultry by-products as well as corn, wheat, and soy ingredients. As is true for all of their recipes, this formula offers complete and balanced nutrition without the use of artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

As promised, the first ingredient in this grain-free recipe is deboned chicken. Fresh meats are a valuable source of protein for dogs but there is one thing you need to be wary about – their high moisture content (up to 80% in some cases) can occasionally be a problem. When the final product is cooked down to a moisture level of 10% (as indicated by the guaranteed analysis), the actual volume of protein the deboned chicken provides could end up being much less than the original volume. This isn’t a problem in this recipe, however, because chicken meal is the second ingredient. Meat meals have already been cooked to remove moisture, making them a highly concentrated source of protein.

In addition to plenty of healthy protein, this BLUE Freedom Grain-Free Adult Chicken Recipe formula also provides a balance of omega fatty acids. Chicken fat is the primary source of fat and, though it may not sound like an appetizing ingredient to you, it is very biologically valuable for dogs. Flaxseed is included as a secondary source of fat, providing both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and canola oil is included for additional omega-6 fatty acids. All of these fatty acids help to promote your dog’s shiny skin and coat, plus it helps to support his immune system as well.

As for carbohydrates, this BLUE Freedom Grain-Free Adult Chicken Recipe formula includes several gluten-free and grain-free options. The primary source of carbohydrate used in this recipe is tapioca starch, supplemented with potatoes, peas, and tomato pomace. All of these are considered digestible forms of carbohydrate for dogs, helping to promote healthy and regular digestion. This recipe also includes a number of fresh fruits and vegetables which, in addition to providing some fiber content of their own, provide natural sources for key vitamins and minerals. These are in addition to the inclusion of Blue’s LifeSource Bits. Other ingredients worth noting include an assortment of chelated minerals which have been chemically bound to protein molecules for maximum nutrient absorption and dried fermentation products which act as probiotics to promote healthy digestion.

Overall, this BLUE Freedom Grain-Free Adult Chicken Recipe formula has a guaranteed analysis as follows:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 24%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 6%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.0%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.7%
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.5%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.5%
  • Glucosamine (Min) – 400mg/kg
  • Calorie Content – 376 kcal/cup

Bottom Line:

Simply put, this Company sets a standard for quality in pet food that all pet food manufacturers should strive to achieve. Not only do they use the freshest natural ingredients available, but all of their products are manufactured in the United States and held to the strictest standards for quality and safety. When you purchase a bag of this food you can be assured that the product will not just meet but exceed his minimum nutritional requirements. As an added bonus, all of their products are made with their exclusive LifeSource Bits which contain a proprietary blend of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to ensure complete and balanced nutrition. My dog is very allergic and is undergoing another episode of skin rash (bacterial) and this time her right ear canal is swollen so badly it’s shut. I’ve been feeding a home cooked meal using pork for 3 months now and eventually want to get her back on Blue Buffalo again once she is well if we can get there. Blue Buffalo lamb & rice was what we’ve fed her for a long time.

On discussing with the skin specialist the various foods out there for sensitive dogs , he advised he had heard you shared facilities with a company that uses soy. That would possibly make the switch back to your kibble not viable. Please let me know if that is and/or was the case with how your kibble is made. I have been very happy with Blue Buffalo in the past, and have heard nothing indicating that was true. I’ve not found anything to support the vet’s information.

There is no blame here on anyone. My dog is very important and this last outbreak has made her pretty miserable. If we don’t get this under control the primary vet is suggesting that the right ear canal be removed entirely. I just am searching for solutions.
    Thanks Sharon Pond

Hi Sharon, I know your note is from almost a year ago, but I wanted to mention that our Golden Retriever had problems with her ears that were on going. Zymox enzymatic solution really helped her ears. I hope your dog is much better now!!!
