Can Dogs Eat Bananas?

It may seem strange, but lots of dogs love bananas. Not just the inside of the banana, but also the banana peel. In fact, humans are the only animals who don’t eat the peels. All other animals eat the peels, which contain plenty of nutrients. But, is it safe for your dog to eat bananas? Are they good for him?

Are Bananas Good or Bad for Dogs?

Bananas are definitely good for dogs. Lots of dogs love them and they can make great treats. Or, you can add a few slices to your dog’s meals to liven them up. Frosty Paws and other dog treats rely on bananas to appeal to dogs. There are also lots of great recipes online – and below – so you can make your own banana treats for dogs. Some people who do rigorous training with their dog use bananas as a way to give their dogs quick energy since bananas have a high sugar content. The next time you’re eating a banana, it’s perfectly okay for you to share some of it with your dog.

Are there any health benefits?

Bananas have lots of health benefits. They are high in potassium and magnesium, as well as fiber. If your dog has diarrhea or is constipated, bananas can be a good way to help normalize things. They also have lots of vitamin B6 to help metabolize proteins and regulate blood cell function. That helps the blood bring more oxygen to muscles and to the brain. They also have vitamin C, a good antioxidant.

Banana Dog Treats:

These banana and oat cookies are a favorite with dogs, and the peanut butter just makes them better.  As an added bonus, the parsley in this recipe will help freshen your dog’s breath. You can substitute mint for half the parsley, if you prefer. Mint is a great breath freshener for dogs.
